For the second season in a row South Alabama lost its opener at home on a last second field goal. Last night it was Southern Utah disappointing a crowd of over 15,000 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. This one seemed to hurt worse. Consider the Jags came back from a 13-7 defecit in the second half to take a 21-13 lead midway into the fourth quarter. Southern Utah scored a TD and field goal on their final two possesions including the three that snatched victory from South Alabama. Here is the story from the team site.
SNOOZING BUT NOT LOSING?
In an article I found in, of all the places the Wall Street Journal, the perception is that Alabama fans are growing complacent with all the winning? Really? Check it out below.
GEARING UP FOR KICK-OFF
I chatted with Joey Jones out at the South Alabama football facility yesteday. He feels like his team has considerably more talent and depth than in the past, as I documented last week. Coach Jones will join us on The Breakfast Club on Thursday morning a little after 8. Kick-off against Southern Utah is that night at 6:30 at Ladd.
Not have I along with many others picked Alabama to play in the BCS National Championship game next January, but one national writer has even picked their opponent. Check out this column by SI.com's Stuart Mandel as he predicts all the bowls.
Another local member of the Crimson Tide has decided to come South. Former Vigor WR Marvin Shinn is now a member of the South Alabama Jaguar football team and will be eligible to play starting next season. Back to the Tide, I am among those who think they will dominate most everything in their way this season. You don't have to take my word. Look what they are saying all across the country, including on the SFGate website.
SHOW YOUR LOVE
Obviously the South Alabama Jaguar football team took their lumps as they transitioned into the highest level of college football a season ago, but the roster has been replentished as the Jags prepare for the challenges of 2013. Where should you see improvement in South Alabama this year?
Defensive line: This unit was actually competative a year ago and will benefit from an infusion of JUCO transfers.
Defensive secondary: Again, help is here thanks to various Junior Colleges around the nation. A unit that was thin a season ago is not experiencing some excellent preseason competition.
Offense: It's the second year under coordinator Robert Matthews. It's also year two for QB Ross Metheny. Plus the Jags will take the wraps on the very talented duel-threat quarterback Brandon Bridge. He has big play ability on every snap. The running game will be better with the enrollment of JUCO tansfers Chris Dinham and Jay Jones. WR Danny Woodson's arrival from Alabama could mean more explosive plays on the outside too. In fact, I saw him take a screen pass 45 yards for a TD in Saturday's scrimmage.
This Sunday it is Fan Day and your chance to meet the players and coaches and even grab some autographs. It's at the Mitchell Center from 4 till 6. All the details are below.
ADD ANOTHER LOCAL JAG
Bad news for the United States is good news for the USA Jag football team. Former McGill-Toolin all state offensive tackle Harrison Loudin has returned to Mobile from the Naval Academy and has enrolled at South Alabama for the fall semester. Loudin, who chose Navy over South and Arkansas State among others, rethought things after several weeks in Annapolis. Loudin is 6ft 5 and a solid 280 with excellent feet and technique for a guy his size. He will likely redhirt this season and have four years of eligibility beginning next fall. Welcome back,Harrison.
Ever hear of Johnny Manziel? Yeah. Thought so. Before all the controversy arose, click below to remember how great a season this guy had last year.
A few things you should notice about South Alabama this
They should be deeper on defense. An influx of JUCO
defensive lineman and defensive backs should create some interesting camp competition and depth during the season.
They will be more explosive on offense. Just how much
redshirt Junior Brandon Bridge plays at quarterback nobody knows just yet but he will definitely see the field starting with game one vs Southern Utah. His
skill set is dynamic. Just wait and see. Plus with the addition of Danny Woodson transferring in from Alabama and the return of TJ Glover, whatever qb
is on the field will have more options at receiver.
Another name I’m hearing good things about is Chris Dinham. The native of Lithonia, Ga is a transfer from Independence CC in Kansas. He could have a large impact at running back.
