About Don Sanders
-
I was born into gospel music. My mother, Grace Sanders, met my dad, Alfred Sanders, at a tent revival meeting. She was playing piano for the evangelist. The evangelist invited a gospel quartet to the revival as special singers. The rest is history.
Throughout my childhood and teenage years, we attanded singing conventions and concerts almost every week. It became part of my life.
I met my wife, Brenda, while a freshman in high school. When we graduated, we got married September 30th, 1960. We have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. Our youngest child passed away June 22, 2004, at age 35, from diabetes. This was the saddest day of our lives and changed us forever.
I had a regional gospel quartet called the Gulf Coast Quartet and we sang for almost 10 years. We recorded 3 albums. We sang mostly in churches throughout the Southeast.
I worked in the insurance business most of my working years. In the mid 80s, I formed my own agency and sold it in the late 90s. I thought I wanted to retire.
One Sunday morning, I was reading the Sound-off column in the newspaper. Someone wanted to know why there was no gospel music on radio or TV on Sunday morning. The Gospel Singing Jubilee had long been off the air. I called an old friend with Clear Channel for advice. He directed me to the right people and the rest is history. Sunday Morning Gospel Time started June 20, 1999.
There's much more to the story about how the program got started. I believe God was in it all the way because doors were opened without any obstacles and "TO GOD BE THE GLORY."
