Apparently, "mobile homes" are not called that because of their mobility, but because of their place of origin. And that place is... Mobile, Alabama.
At least according to snopes.com, the site that I've used many times over the years to dispel wild stories that have been emailed to me. There is nothing more satisfying than looking something up that you think is hogwash, and seeing "FALSE" at the top of the page. I have no problem with bursting someone's bubble in such cases.
But now I'm beginning to question the validity of the site... after all, Wikipedia has a HUGE article about mobile homes, and there's NO mention of Mobile, Alabama in it.
See for yourself:

Perhaps even more disturbing is this trivia tidbit at the end of the Snopes article:
The 1974 Lynard Skynard hit "Sweet Home Alabama" was a reworking of a 1951 radio jingle advertising "Sweet Homes, Alabama" (who were the first to build mobile homes).
I feel like I've woken up in some parallel dimension where nothing is as it seems. Next thing you know, we'll be expecting snow in Mobile.
Oh wait... we are. So I'll end here with two videos: one for a mobile home dealer in Cullman (this is great!), and one of "Sweet Home, Alabama"... which I am almost certain has nothing at all to do with mobile homes.
