Danny Thomas opened the doors of St. Jude Children's Research Hopital in 1962.The hopital was founded upon the principle that no child should have to die in the dawn of life. With only seven dollars left to his name, Danny Thomas prayed to St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, for guidance in his life. He claimed that if St. Jude would help show him his way in life that he would build him a shrine. This shrine has turned into St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

For over 45 years now, St. Jude Children's Research Hopital has been the leading research facility for childhood cancer. No child is turned away due to their inability to pay or their background. Upon recieving treatment at St. Jude, no family ever receives a bill for anything provided by the hospital. Operating costs are estimated at roughly 1.4 million dollars...DAILY...most of which comes from public contributions. Of these contributions, 85 cents of every dollar donated can be guaranteed to go to patient care and research. Upon finding new medical breakthroughs, St. Jude is willing to share their findings with affiliated hospitals nationwide. Protocols are sent to local hospitals so that patients can be treated at home. Mobile currently has over 50 patients being treated at St. Jude.
